Classic Roast Chicken
Classic roast chicken is a timeless and simple dish that never fails to impress. Here's a basic recipe to guide you through the process:
Ingredients:
1 whole chicken (about 3-4 pounds)
Salt and pepper
Olive oil or melted butter
Optional: herbs like thyme, rosemary, or sage
Optional aromatics like garlic cloves, onion, lemon, or carrots for stuffing the chicken cavity
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Remove the giblets from the cavity of the chicken, if included, and pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture will help the skin crisp up nicely.
Season the chicken generously inside and out with salt and pepper. If desired, you can also add chopped herbs or garlic cloves to the cavity for extra flavor.
Truss the chicken if you like. Trussing helps the chicken cook more evenly and keeps the shape intact, but it's optional if you're not too concerned about presentation.
Rub the chicken all over with olive oil or melted butter. This helps the skin brown and crisp up beautifully during roasting.
Place the chicken breast side up on a rack set inside a roasting pan. Elevating the chicken allows the heat to circulate evenly around it, ensuring crispy skin all around.
Roast the chicken in the preheated oven for about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, or until the juices run clear when you pierce the thigh with a knife, and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C) in the thickest part of the thigh.
If you like, you can baste the chicken with pan juices halfway through the cooking process to keep it moist and flavorful.
Once the chicken is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for about 10-15 minutes before carving. Resting allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a juicier bird.
Carve the chicken and serve with your favorite sides, such as roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or a simple salad.
Enjoy your classic roast chicken!
